Abstract

ABSTRACT Turkish-Japanese relations have begun during the period of Sultan Abdülhamid II. and Emperor Meiji. As a result of the reformation movements led by Meiji, many Japanese visited the Ottoman Empire with different reasons and these visits contributed to the development of the relations. Sultan Abdülhamid II, regarding these visits and a medal was bestowed by the Japanese Emperor, sent the battleship Ertuğrul to Japan on July 14, 1889. After a successful voyage, Ertuğrul reached Japan but on the way back the ship sank on September 16,1890. This occasion was a milestone that helped the formation of Turkish- Japanese relations on a stable ground. The ceremonies held by the two nations for the deceased soldiers made the relations more meaningful. After the sinking of the battleship Ertuğrul in the territorial waters of Japan, there have been important events which affected the relationship between the nations. Among these events, the Russian-Japan war and Japan's interest in the islam religion can be cited. Especially the Japanese victory against Russia proved that `an Eastern Nation could defeat a Western Nation` and this led the Ottoman Empire to feel more sympathetic towards Japanese people. In the post Russian-Japan war era, a lot of writings about Japan were translated into Turkish and published. In addition, Japan's interest in the islam religion was taken into consideration by Muslims and there had been attempts to spread islam in the country. These attemts, especiaaly led by Abdürreşid İbrahim, made İslam one of the official religions in Japan. Even though there seemed to be a decrease in the relations after the overthrown of Sultan Abdülhamid II, the interest towards Japan has not ceased completely and the relations continued by personal efforts.
