Abstract

ABSTRACT THE CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONALISM IN THE DISCOURSES OF THE REPUBLIC PEOPLE PARTY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF POLITICAL CULTURE By Hamit Yilmaz My study, dealing with the nationalistic discourses of the Republic People Party, focuses on the early years of the Turkish Republic by employing a historical and a sociological perspective and a method of an archeological reading a la Foucault. Accordingly, the study is primarily concerned with the ways in which the Party, the major agent of the Turkish nation-state, an outcome of the process called political modernization, constructs the ideology of nationalism. The phenomenon of nationalism within the context of political culture is evaluated with respect to the notions of historical continuity and break. When it comes to analyzing nationalistic discourses constructed within the framework of major themes, that is, the party, the state, the nation, and Turkishness, it seems that these concepts are articulated in the discourses of the Party as though they are identical, and at the end they are transmitted through political government through a highly centrist mentality and thinking. The analysis of centrism which is decoded by an archeological reading, has important implications for understanding today's political structure and the state society linkage in Turkey. 166

ÖZET 'Politik Kültür Bağlamında Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi'nin Milliyetçilik Söylemleri' adlı çalışmam, özellikle tarihsel sosyolojik perspektif ve arkeolojik okuma yöntemi ile CHP'nin -tek parti dönemi- üzerinde yoğunlaşmaktadır. Buna göre söz konusu çalışma temelde siyasal modernleş(tir)me projesinin ürünü olarak pratikleşen Türk ulus devletinin edimcisi olan CHP'nin milliyetçiliği üzerinde durmaktadır. Türk politik kültürü bağlamında milliyetçilik olgusu Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyet'e geçişi süreklilik/kopuş bütünlüğü içinde değerlendirilmekte ve tek parti dönemi boyunca inşa edilen milliyetçilik söylemleri 'parti, devlet, millet, Türk' kavramları çerçevesinde çözümlendiğinde bu temaların özdeşleştirilerek merkeziyetçi bir zihniyetle iktidara taşındığı görülmektedir. Arkeolojik okuma yöntemiyle deşifre edilen bu merkeziyetçi zihniyetin (otoriter, devletçi, Türk milliyetçisi) çözümlenmesi günümüz Türkiye'sinin siyasal yapısını ve devlet-toplum ilişkisinin anlaşılmasında önemli veriler sunmaktadır. 165
