Synthesis and characterization of various derivations of poly(2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate)

Abstract

In this thesis ;firstly a novel monomer 2-{[2-(3-thienyl)acetyl]oxy}ethyl2-methylacrylate (HEMAT) was synthesized by the reaction of 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate with 3-thiophene acetic acid. After that p(HEMAT) was obtained from this monomers self polymerization, and p(MMA-co-HEMAT) was obtained from copolymerization with Methylmethacrylate (MMA). Also p(HEMA-co-HEMAT) polymer was synthesized via an esterification by p(HEMA) and 3-thiophene acetic acid. The characterization of obtained polymers was investigated by FT-IR and1H NMR spectroscopy and the termal behavior of the polymers was examined by TG analysis. According to the data obtained from TG; when the thermal stabilities of p(HEMA), p(HEMAT), p(HEMA-co-HEMAT) and p(MMA-co-HEMAT) are compared, it was observed that p(HEMA-co-HEMAT) was less thermally stable than p(HEMA) but p(MMA-co-HEMAT) was more thermally stable than p(HEMAT).
