Eşcinsel edebiyatta erkeklik kurguları

Abstract

This thesis studies the gay males and their relationships as portrayed in the literary works identified within themes of homosexuality, gender mainstreaming, masculinity and hegemonic masculinity. In order to do examine these themes, the study primarily focuses on how the meaning of homosexuality has transformed and concordantly how this transformation has been reflected on literature throughout history. Thereafter, the process of analysis continues with exploring how the journey of homosexuality, homophobia and homosexuality has been used as a theme in literature ever since the works of the Ancient Greek Society to the present day. Later on, the issues of gender roles attributed to biological sexes, values related to masculinity and their reflections on the relationship between gays have been analyzed; for the partiarchal system and masculine domination built on gender roles do not manifest themselves solely in the relationships between men and women. The individuals having same sex romantic relationships are also shaped by the society and the culture they live in and these individuals carry beliefs, stereotypes and schemas related to gender roles and masculinity. In order to reveal how these values hold a vital importance in their relationships, the characters in Üçüncü Tekil Şahis, written by Mehmet Bilal in 2003 and Adresinde Bulunamadı written in 2005, have been selected as study subjects. With the detailed analysis carried out on the concepts of masculine discourse and power, gender roles and hegemonic masculinity, the study discusses how all these concepts play an important role in the relationships of gay male characters in the novels and whether or not the concept of masculinity is independent from the sexual orientation of the individuals.
