Representation of cultural space and identity in Sandra Cisneros` fiction

Abstract

Kültürel alan kavramı Bhabha'nın The Location of Culture eserinden, kültürel kimlik kavramı Hall'un ?Cultural Identity and Diaspora? adlı makalesinden yola çıkarak yorumlanırken, `yeni' Chicana kavramı Anzaldua'nın Borderlands/La Frontera adlı eseri çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir. Teorik ve tarihi bakış açıları çerçevesinde yukarıda adı geçen ilişki The House on Mango Street ve Caramelo adlı romanlarda ve ?Women Hollering Creek? ve ?Never Marry a Mexican? adlı kısa öykülerde ele alınmıştır. The House on Mango Street kişisel kadın alanına dair arayışı resmederken, Caramelo gerçek kadın kimliğine dair arayışı yansıtır. ?Women Hollering Creek? La Llorona'nın yeniden yorumlanması ile kadın kimliğine dair algının nasıl yeniden şekillendiğini anlatırken, ?Never Marry a Mexican? La Malinche'nin yeniden şekillendirilmesi ile kültürel kimliğin yeni bir bakış açısından kurgulanmasını anlatır.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the representation of cultural space and identity in the works of a prominent Chicana writer, Sandra Cisneros. Since the main focus of this study is on cultural space and identity, three theorists, Homi K. Bhabha, Stuart Hall and Gloria E. Anzaldua have been chosen to construct a theoretical perspective in order to analyze the two concepts jointly and severally in Cisneros? works: While the concept of cultural space has been interpreted through Bhabha?s The Location of Culture and cultural identity through Hall?s ?Cultural Identity and Diaspora,? Anzaldua?s Borderlands/La Frontera has offered a perspective to look at the `new? Chicana. Cisneros? literary works are the products of Chicana feminist thought which is a result of the communal experience of inhabiting the Borderlands between Mexico and the United States. Therefore, the Chicana experience has been explored by offering a historical perspective to observe the interaction between the dynamics of cultural space and the process of identity construction. In the light of the theoretical and historical backgrounds, the aforementioned interaction has been evaluated in the novels The House on Mango Street and Caramelo and short stories ?Women Hollering Creek? and ?Never Marry a Mexican.? While The House on Mango Street illustrates the search for personal female space, Caramelo depicts the search for a true female identity. ?Women Hollering Creek? illuminates how female identity is reconsidered through a reinterpretation of La Llorona and ?Never Marry a Mexican? reveals how cultural identity is reconsidered through reshaping La Malinche.
