VIABSTRACTINVESTIGATIONS ON THE SEED YIELD AND VARIOUSAGRONOMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOMEFORAGE GRASSESOKKAOĞLU, HülyaMSc. In Field Crops DepartmentSupervisor : Prof. Dr. Rıza AVCIOĞLUAugust 2006, 106 pagesIn this study conducted to investigate the seed yield and someagronomical features and correlations between these characteristics,Dactylis glomerata, Bromus inermis, Arrhenatherum elatius, Festucaarundinacea, Elymus hispidus, Lolium perenne and Phalarisarundinacea were evaluated. 10+10=20 Individual plants were selectedin spring -2004 randomly from the different crop nurseries established inspring- 2003 and some vegetative (length and thickness of main stem, number of nodes, length of internodes, herbage yield, hay yield, drymatter content and yield) and generative characteristics (number ofgenerative tillers, length of spike, number of spikelets per spike 1000seed weiğht and seed yield) were examined. Besides, correlations anddirect and indirect effects of path coefficients between these vegetativeand generative yield components were also investigated. Both vegetativeand generative characteristics examined displayed great variation amongthese forage grasses. Data related to the correlation and path analysisresults suggested significant selection criteria for the future breedingstudies. It was determined that Lolium perenne was a proper grass forsmall headed Livestock and Dactylis glomerata, Bromus inermis andFestuca arundinacea for cattle husbandary and particularly underirrigated mediterranean conditions of Ege Region . Arrhenatherumelatius, Elymus hispidus, and Phalaris arundinacea being propergrasses for cutting succesfully adapted to the region. It was alsosuggested that seeds of Dactylis glomerata, Bromus inermis,Arrhenatherum elatius, Festuca arundinacea and Elymus hispidus canbe produced succesfully in the region. It was concluded that seedVIIproduction of Lolium perenne must be done in highlands of the area dueto the humidity conditions. Keywords: Dactylis glomerata, Bromus inermis, Arrhenatherumelatius, Festuca arundinacea, Elymus hispidus, Loliumperenne, Phalaris arundinecea, vegetative and generativefeatures
