Investigation of supercritical and Soxhlet extractions of sewage sludges

Abstract

VII ABSTRACT INVESTIGATION OF SUPERCRITICAL AND SOXHLET EXTRACTIONS OF SEWAGE SLUDGES GÜNGÖREN, Tülay MSc in Chemical Engineeering Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sağlam Assoc. Prof. Dr. Levent Ballice September 2004, 169 pages In this study, liquefaction of sewage sludges obtained from Wastewater Treatment Plant of Petkim Petrochemical Complex by Soxhlet and supercritical water and toluene extractions were investigated. The scope of this work was to identify maximum extract yield which is related with recovery of organic matter in sewage sludge. The most suitable reaction conditions were determined and different techniques were used to characterize extraction products. Some parameters like solvent type, solvent/solid ratio and temperature were investigated to determine the optimum reaction conditions for the maximum recovery of organic matter. Keywords: Supercritical Fluid Extraction, Soxhlet Extraction, Column Chromatography, Sewage Sludge
