Abstract

It is a known fact that social support has important effects on the beginning, the course, and the duration of many physical and mental diseases. In other words, social support is a social variable, which is accepted to have an association with the human health. Social supports are thought to affect both the occurrence of stressor life events and the results created by these [stressor life events] in various modes. Social support brings about a change in the situation of the individual, the meaning of that situation, and the resultant emotional response. Therefore, the individual develops effective coping - mechanisms towards stressor life events. Social support is necessary for the individual to maintain health. The most important task in providing social support pertains to the nurses. The nurses should know the necessary conditions in order to obtain social support, should understand whether social support is sufficient or not, and should provide counseling in cases where social support is insufficient. This Article focuses on social support, social support systems, the relationship between social support and health, and lastly the role of nurses in providing the social support.

Sosyal desteğin, fiziksel ve ruhsal çok sayıda hastalığın ortaya çıkışı, gidişi ve süresi üzerinde önemli etkilerinin olduğu bilinmektedir. Başka bir deyişle sosyal destek, insan sağlığı ile ilişkili olduğu kabul edilen sosyal bir değişkendir. Sosyal desteğin, hem stres verici yaşam olaylarının oluşumunu hem de onların yarattığı sonuçları çeşitli şekillerde etkilediği düşünülmektedir. Sosyal destek; bireyin içinde bulunduğu durum, bu durumun anlamı ve gösterilen emosyonel tepkide değişiklik meydana getirir. Bu yüzden, bireyler stres verici yaşam olayları ile etkili baş etme mekanizmaları geliştirirler. Sosyal destek bireyin sağlığını sürdürmesi için gereklidir. Sosyal desteğin sağlanmasında en önemli görev hemşirelere düşmektedir. Hemşireler, sosyal desteğin elde edilmesi için gerekli koşulları bilmeli, sosyal desteğin yeterli olup olmadığım anlamalı, sosyal desteğin yetersiz olduğu durumlarda danışmanlık yapmalıdır. Bu makale, sosyal destek, sosyal destek sistemleri, sosyal destek ve sağlık arasındaki ilişki ve son olarak sosyal desteğin sağlanmasında hemşirenin rolü üzerine odaklanmaktadır.
