Analysis of Disaster Articles Published in Dergipark

Abstract

This study aims to examine the interdisciplinary distribution of articles on disasters published on the DergiPark platform in Turkey between the years 2015-2024 and to evaluate research in the field of geography in terms of various variables. In countries like Turkey with a high disaster risk, the main problem of the research is which disciplines the research on disasters is concentrated in and on which plane they are addressed from a geographical perspective. The method of the study is based on the content analysis of the articles obtained from the searches made with the keyword “disaster” on the DergiPark platform. The study was designed as a case study, which is a qualitative research method. The research was limited to the studies conducted between the years 2015-2024. The obtained data were classified according to the disciplines of public administration, engineering, health sciences, geography, education, psychology, and history; studies on disasters in each discipline were presented with numerical data. It was observed that academic studies on disasters were concentrated in the fields of public administration, health sciences, education, and engineering, respectively. Disaster studies conducted in the field of geography largely focus on climatological and ground-based disasters; Studies in fields such as social geography, biological disasters and historical geography are limited. When studies on the spatial effects of disasters are examined, it is determined that the issues are mostly addressed at the local level and that the number of studies on the preparation phase of disaster management processes is higher. In this context, it has been revealed that research in the field of disaster management in Turkey has a multidisciplinary structure; studies in the field of geography are particularly concentrated at the local level and in the preparation phase. In the field of disaster management, further research on other stages, in addition to intervention and recovery processes, and. increasing interdisciplinary studies will make significant contributions to the field.
