Collection of Ottoman Documents in the Archive of the Croatian Academy of Science and Art

Abstract

This paper examines an important archival collection located in Zagreb, containing 760 documents from the Ottoman Eyalet of Bosnia. Spanning a broad period from the late 15th to the late 19th centuries, this collection reflects the rich history of the region and has yet to be adequately evaluated. The collection encompasses various types of official and unofficial documents, including state papers such as imperial decrees (ferman), patents of appointment (berat), and administrative orders (buyruldu); legal documents like title deeds (temessük), bonds (sened), petitions (arzuhal); religious and administrative records such as land registry documents (tapuname), religious rulings (fetva), and foundation charters (vakıfname); as well as letters, wills, accounting books, and other miscellaneous records. These documents, predominantly produced by state institutions, provide valuable insights into the functioning of Ottoman provincial administration while also offering rich data that sheds light on the socio-cultural structure of the local community in the province of Bosnia. The primary aim of this study is to draw attention to the potential contributions this little-known archival collection can make to Ottoman Balkan history research. The research particularly aims to lay the groundwork for future studies on the administrative, social, and cultural life in Ottoman-era Bosnia and to facilitate new academic discoveries.
