Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of adding bacterial inoculants to gum bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) silages on fermentation quality, aerobic stability, in vitro metabolizable energy content, and relative feed value. For this purpose, the gum bean was harvested at the beginning of the flowering period and ensiled with two different commercial inoculants (İA- Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus acidilactici, and İB-Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecium and xylanase). After 60 days of fermentation, various physical and chemical analyses were carried out on the silages. Physical evaluations showed that all silage groups were first class according to the DLG system and second class according to the Flieg scoring. Compared to the control group, organic matter increased, and crude fat decreased in the IB group (P<0.05). In the IA and IB groups, crude protein raised, while crude cellulose and crude ash declined (P<0.05). Nitrogen-free substances decreased in the IA group compared to the others (P<0.05). Neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and hemicellulose decreased significantly in silage groups with inoculant. Acid detergent lignin decreased in the IB group and cellulose decreased in the IA group (P<0.05). Metabolizable energy, digestible dry matter, dry matter consumption, and relative feed value of silages increased significantly with the addition of inoculant (P<0.05). Inoculant additions increased the acetic and lactic acid production of silages while decreasing the amounts of butyric acid and ammonia-nitrogen (P<0.05). According to the seven-day aerobic stability test results, inoculant additions reduced pH and carbon dioxide output in silages (P<0.05). In conclusion, gum bean silage has the potential to be used as a roughage source in ruminant feeding.
