Abstract

Among the methods for imaging diagnosis of the spinal cord, epidural phlebography allows the study of the regional vascular system, and indirectly, the visualization of the integrity of intervertebral disks, joints and bony structures. Seeking to refine upon the diagnosis of spinal cord, especially at lumbosacral segment, the objective of this study was to develop a technique for vertebral venography by means of the lateral saphena vein with abdominal compression in cats. Sixteen healthy, short haired, without defined race cats, with ages between one and five years, and weight from 1.8 to 4.9 kg were used. With the animals under general anesthesia, abdominal compression with a bandage was performed; then, a hydrosoluble contrast medium (1 ml/kg) was administered via lateral saphena vein. This technique showed a perfect fulfillment of the lumbosacral vessels. Abdominal compression allowed vein flow obstruction of the caudal vena cava, making easier the blood flowing into the vertebral internal venous plexus. It was concluded that lumbosacral epidural phlebography technique, allows the complete fulfillment of the vertebral internal venous plexus, thus, helping in the diagnosis of spine disorders at lumbar and lumbosacral segments.
