Pregnancy in adolescence has become a topic widely explored in several areas of science as a result of the social, psychological and biomedical issues that it involves, showing controversies and complexities. The present study investigated the implications of pregnancy and motherhood in adolescence and the changes related to this experience, according to the perceptions of adolescents and their companions or mothers. Participated in this study 15 adolescents and their companions or mothers. Data collection was performed by the application of two instruments: a questionnaire, which investigated the characteristics of the familiar system, such as socio-demographic data, household composition, division of household chores, caring for the baby and social network of support; and a semi-structured interview, composed of questions on the first reactions to the news of the pregnancy, implications of the birth of the baby on the family dynamics and perceptions about adolescent motherhood. The first instrument was applied only to adolescents and the second to all participants. The results suggest that motherhood among adolescents, in certain arrangements, can benefit the teenager and its family. However, the social vulnerability of adolescents is made clear when it is revealed that the reported sexual activity was characterized by sexual initiation without preventing pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. It is considered that the results achieved in this research can assist in the preparation of programs of sexual and reproductive family education, which can be a way that young people can develop their sex life healthily and happily, adjusted to the family, the group of peers and society. To research and develop programs that can offer support to this population is a job for the investigators of this area.

A gravidez na adolescência tem se tornado um tema amplamente pesquisado em diversas áreas em decorrência das questões sociais, psicológicas e biomédicas que a envolvem, revelando controvérsias e complexidades. O presente estudo investigou as implicações da gravidez e da maternidade na adolescência e as mudanças advindas desta experiência segundo a percepção das adolescentes, e seus respectivos companheiros ou mães. Participaram do estudo 15 adolescentes e seus respectivos companheiros ou mães. A coleta de dados foi efetuada por meio da aplicação de dois instrumentos: o questionário de caracterização do sistema familiar através do qual foi investigado os dados sócio-demográficos, composição familiar, divisão de tarefas domésticas, cuidados com o bebê e rede social de apoio, e o roteiro de entrevista semi-estruturado, composto de questões sobre as reações iniciais frente à notícia da gravidez, implicações do nascimento do bebê sobre a dinâmica familiar e percepção sobre a maternidade adolescente. O primeiro instrumento foi aplicado somente às adolescentes e o segundo a todos os participantes. Os resultados sugerem que a maternidade na adolescência em determinados arranjos pode se configurar em aspectos benéficos à própria adolescente e ao seu entorno. No entanto, a vulnerabilidade social das adolescentes fica clara na medida em que a atividade sexual relatada foi caracterizada pela iniciação sexual sem prevenção contra a gravidez ou doenças sexualmente transmissíveis.
