Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different adhesives and of the thermal cycling / storage (TC) on the bond strength of resin cement (RC) (photo/dual/self-cure) to a feldspathic ceramic. The hypothesis is as lower the pH of the adhesive, the lower the bond strength, especially in the cementation with resin cement chemical. Ninety blocks (6 x 6 x 4mm) (N=90) of the feldspathic ceramic (VM7-VITA) were made according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The ceramic surface was conditioned with hydrofluoric acid 10% (Dentsply) for 20 s + silane (Porcelain Primer, Bisco). Three adhesives (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus Adhesive (SBMP, 3M ESPE; pH = 5.6); Single Bond (SB, 3M ESPE; pH = 3.4); Prime & Bond NT (PBNT, Dentsply; pH = 1.7)) were applied. After, three RC with different cure were applied: Photo (Variolink II base, Ivoclar Vivadent); Dual (Variolink II base + catalyst, Ivoclar Vivadent); self-cured (C&B, Bisco). Therefore, nine groups were constituted (N=10 specimens for group): (1) PBNT + RC chemical, (2) PBNT + RC dual, (3) PBNT + RC photo, (4) SB + RC chemical, (5) SB + RC dual, (6) SB + RC photo, (7) SBMP + RC chemical, (8) SBMP + RC dual, (9) SBMP + RC photo. The specimens were stored (37°C/24h) and then sectioned (adhesive area: ± 1 mm²). The specimens of each block were random divided in 2 aging conditions: Dry- microtensile test after cutting; TC- storage 150 days (37oC) + thermo-cycling (x12.000, 5°C-55°C). Considering 3 factors of the study (adhesive [3 levels], resin cement [3 levels] and aging [2 levels]) (factorial 3x3x2), 18 testing groups were composed. The tensile bond strength test was carried in a universal testing machine (cross-head speed: 1 mm/min). The 3-way ANOVA showed that the results of the bond strength were affected by the factors adhesive (P=0,0001) and resin cement (P=0,0003)... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below)
