Abstract

Obtaining acicular ferrite structure of low carbon steels is promising because a good mechanical properties combination. The toughness improvement is due the interlaced morphology of the acicular ferrite that promote crack propagation interruption. Although the mechanical are suitable to structural applications, the use of this microstrocture has been limited in view of complicated mechanism of acicular ferrite nucleation. The formation of acicular ferrite in low carbon wrougth steels is limited in view of low density of nonmetallic inclusions those serve as preferential sites of intragrunular nucleation. The purpose of this work is a study of processing conditions effects like austenitizing temperature and isothermal transformation an acicular ferrite formation. The results shown that it’s possible to obtain multiphase structures with great fraction of acicular ferrite as well as excellent strength-ductility combination. KEYWORD: Low carbon steels, acicular ferrite, mechanical properties.
