Abstract

The primary objective of neonatal intensive care service is to save lives, having the patient as object of concern, but the neonatal team has to be able to detect and meet the needs and priorities of the newborn and his family. During neonatal period, the high-risk newborn care has been focused through the levei of maternal satisfaction. The Neonatal Index of Parent Satisfaction (NIPS) is a tool drawn up on the opinion of parents with infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), which is a validated, simple and easy-to-use tool to assess mother satisfaction. To evaluate the levei of maternal satisfaction with the medical care and the attitudes of NICU team. To examine the factors associated with maternal satisfaction and the aspects of health care associated with the highest levei of satisfaction and dissatisfaction. A prospective cross-sectional survey was developed from May 2004 to April 2005 at the Neonatal Unit of Hospital das Clínicas - Botucatu Medical School - UNESP. After the infants'discharge from NICU the mothers were interviewed. The study was approved by the ethic research committee. A modified NIPS adapted to our reality, was comprised by 25 c1osed-ended questions. The lowest score was 25 and the highest was 100. Mothers were considered satisfied when the score was > 50 and highly satisfied when it was > 90. Statistical analysis included ANOVA, Chi-square test, Student's t test or Mann-Whitney. The significance levei was 5%. RESULTS: 120 mothers were interviewed. The NIPS score was high, with a mean score of 90l8,1 and a median of 92 (P25:85,5 and P75:95), minimum value of 54 and maximum value of 100. Values between 91-95 and 96-100 were predominant, and 64% of mothers were highly satisfied. The average... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below)
