Abstract

Bone resorption is a limiting factor that determines the degree of orthodontically induced dental movement. Several hormones, including estrogens, play a key role in both bone formation and bone resorption processes. Even though many studies have shown a direct relationship between estrogens and orthodontically induced dental movement, their effect on dental movement after removing orthodontic appliance and on alveolar bone morphology during this phase remains to be clarified. Being the maintenance of dental stability following orthodontic treatment an important key for a successful treatment, the knowledge and control of factors that could affect this stability are essential for Orthodontics. Then, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of estrogen (17ß - estradiol) on alveolar bone morphology and on dental movement following removal of orthodontic appliance in normally cycling rats, ovariectomized rats and ovariectomized rats with estrogen reposition therapy. The orthodontic appliance was installed in the left maxillary incisive and first maxillary molar, where remained for 14 days. The untreated right side was used as control. Histological analysis of alveolar bone revealed that ovariectomized rats presented more bone resorption than the others two groups. Also, ovariectomized rats presented larger dental movement than that observed in normally cycling rats while estrogen reposition therapy in ovariectomized rats was capable of reversing that effect. Taken together, these results strongly suggest that in order to have a more effective orthodontic treatment, getting more information about the general healthy state of patients, mainly concerned with estrogen disturbs, is necessary during both the diagnostic and planning orthodontic treatment.
