Abstract

We studied some dynamical properties for the chaotic behaviour of a classical light ray dynamics suffering specular reflections inside a periodically corrugated waveguide. The dynamics of the model is described in terms of a two-dimensional area preserving nonlinear map. We shown that the phase space is mixed, in the sense that, one can observe Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) islands surrounded by a large chaotic sea that is limited by a set of invariant spanning curves. The chaotic sea was characterized using scaling arguments near of the transition from integrable to non-integrable. Such formalism shows that the critical exponents are analytically related. Scaling arguments are usually applied in critical phenomena and widely used in the characterization of phase transitions. The waveguide model was studied analytically and numerically and our results are presented and discussed in this work.
