Abstract

The aim of this study was to use the strain gauge method to analyze in vitro the efficiency of conventional and resin modified glass ionomer cements as occlusal load dissipaters in composite restorations. Two strain gauges were bonded to polyurethane matrixes with cyanoacrylate adhesive, so that their top surfaces would be tangential to the bottom wall of the matrix on both sides (left and right). For each group, 10 test specimens were made, 40 specimens in total. In Group 1: the cavities were completely filled with microhybrid composite resin; Group 2: filled with conventional glass ionomer cement and microhybrid composite; Group 3: filled with conventional glass ionomer cement for lining and microhybrid composite; Group 4: filled with resin modified glass ionomer cement and microhybrid composite. The test specimens were placed in a universal test machine EMIC, and subjected to a 50 N load for 30 s. Monitoring was done ten times every second, thus providing 300 readings per strain gauge. Data from the two strain gauges were amplified and transferred with an electrical signal amplifier, and then recorded to be analyzed later by special AqDados software. The data collected were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and the Tukey tests (p? 0,05). The mean microdeformation values found for the experimental groups showed no statistically significant difference. From the data obtained in this study, it could be inferred that the presence of GIC as a base material for resin composite restorations, and also the types of cements used presented no significant alterations in the microdeformation values.
