Abstract

This paper is supported by research conducted with the traditional population of Praia do Sono, in Parati, Rio de Janeiro. We observed significant changes have occurred in daily life of local residents, due the development of tourist activities. We report how these influences occur in behavior and consumption habits, considering consumption as symbolic acts that permeate social relations, able to produce and reproduce social identity. We also set forth that the compose of these new identities is part of the changing process. Our research led us to rate that is not absolutely regarding a culture that succumbs due to the shifts, arguing throughout the essay as the inhabitants are also active agents into this dynamic changing process of their way of life.
