Abstract

There are several methods for the quantification of the canine population in urban areas, including the census, which is the total or direct count of restricted or supervised dogs. As an alternative to this method there are sampling methods which allow an estimation of the population, which can be used for both restricted and free roaming dogs. One method used to determine the size population of free roaming dogs in urban areas, is the photographic capture-recapture. However, if used isolate, becomes inefficient when the purpose is to investigate how these animals use public spaces. This paper proposes the use of this method with the use of a GPS (Global Positional System) to evaluate the movement of free dogs on public roads. With the use of a motorcycle and an observer, all the streets of Ipanema Garden and part of Dona Amelia districts, in Araçatuba-SP, were covered by 12 times over two days, during the morning and afternoon, from 07 until 18 o’clock, with one week interval between them. The free dogs were photographed and their locations were determined by a GPS. The animal identification and the registration of their respective geographic positions allowed us to estimate the spatial and geographical concentration of animals and the distances traveled by them in the neighborhood. Qui-Square test was used for statistical analysis of the results with the BioEstat 5.3 Program (0.05 of significance). A total of 77 dogs were observed on the streets and 21 of them were photographed more than once (photo recaptured). The methodology allows observing that there was a greaterconcentration of them in certain areas of the district, especially in areas where the streets were unpaved and most houses had no walls...
