Abstract

The present thesis aims at the systematization and organization of information and knowledge related to the pharmacopoeia used in the treatment and cure of diseases that affected the population of Colonial Brazil (18th century) in a specialized vocabulary. In the first section, the historical context referring to the gold cycle in Minas Gerais is presented, in addition to the works chosen to compose the corpus that lends itself to reading, extraction and selection of specialized lexical units. It is also possible to observe the medical practice and the healing strategies used by barber-surgeons to treat the sick at the time. In the second section, there are the linguistic theories, more specifically focused on Lexicon Studies, which this thesis makes use of. In the third section, the process of extraction and selection of lexical units referring to the studied domain is exposed. The lexical units collected are verified and analyzed from a qualitative and quantitative perspective. In the fourth section, the macrostructure of the pharmacopoeia vocabulary is organized into lexical fields; the entries are systematized and structured for the prototype of a specialized vocabulary. Based on excerpts from the medical discourse of the 18th century, the definitions for such entries are elaborated. The organization of the nomenclature of this vocabulary follows two criteria: a proposal for the conceptual structuring of the studied domain and an alphabetical index. Regarding the vocabulary microstructure, are presented the grammatical class, the possible variants of the input word, the organized definitions, in addition to examples extracted from the corpus. Finally, in the fifth section, there is the lexical-semantic analysis of the specialized lexical units that designate the plants used to treat the diseases that manifested in the skin of the Brazilian population. It is considered that in addition to contributing to the areas of Lexicon Studies, this work is also relevant in the areas of History, Health, Medical Sciences and other similar areas.
