This article analyses the way referentiality and fiction work in Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald’s novel Save Me the Waltz, published in 1932, putting into perspective the genres autobiography and autobiographic novel. The considerable similarities between Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald’s life and the journey of main character Alabama Beggs blurs the boundary about how the autobiographical contents should be seem when writing about the self, even though there is also fiction, The discussions about those genres evoke Philippe Lejeune, specially his work O Pacto Autobiográfico: de Rousseau à internet, but also Alba Olmi, Eurídice Figueiredo, Cida Golin and Nora Catelli.
