Sincronicidade e Presciência em Duna

Sincronicidade e Presciência em Duna

Abstract

This research intends to study the Synchronicity principle, as formulated by Carl Gustav Jung, and how such principle is reflected in Dune science fiction series through the divining capacity named as Prescience. The series had become renowned for dealing with themes not usually related to the universe of science fiction and it is considered by some of the critics the most important work of this gender regarding the countercultural north-american context. Due to the fact that the fictional universe of Dune had been sewed from ecological notions, from quantum physics theories that interrelate consciousness with reality instantiation as well as archetypal ideas and their conection with the colective unconscious, we have uses Jung's theories as the main epistemological foundation of this research; also this current work is based in quantum physics theories and certain principles derived from eastern religions metaphysics (such as Buddhism and Tantrism) that are capable of expressing the interrelation between consciousness and the manifested reality. The Synchronicity principle is a product of a work between Jung and Wolfgang Pauli, between psyche studies and physics studies and, as discussed by M.L. von Franz, has a direct relation with the divination phenomena (expressed in the series through a genetically developed ability, Prescience) that are an essential point in Dune's narrative.
