Abstract

The space category has been inserted in the arguments of the arts since the beginning of its understanding as a whole. Theorists who discuss fine arts and cinema, bring countless and fertile discussions on this topic. In cinema, any and all films are considered space-time (they use framing, filming and editing techniques that provide manipulation of these two elements as one, as well as the creation of a space as pure temporality). The present research proposes to evaluate how the space category operates in the film Casa Vazia (2004) by Kim Ki-Duk, since in the film the cinematographic discourse seems to manifest issues of the social-urban space in contemporary times. In this dissertation the film is used with an operative and exemplary character to discuss the issue of space in cinema, allocated in the very structural constitution of the narrative, in the relationship between cinematographic form and theme. However, in Casa Vazia the question of space is more viscerally and directly integrated into the diegesis itself; the characters live situations in which the relationship of solitude and the intimate living of modern life is mediated by space. This dissertation is composed of two parts in structural terms: the first is theoretical in nature and the second, analytical-interpretative, in which we will understand important components of scenes from the film Casa Vazia, with possibly fertile notes to enrich the aesthetic appreciation of the film. As a theoretical basis we resort to the problem of representation of space, in authors such as Marcel Martin, Éric Rohmer in Cristian Borges and Luiz Carlos de Oliveira. For film analysis, we will use Laurent Jullier, Michel Marie and Jacques Aumont, among others.
