Abstract

Introduction: Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential provides information about auditory maturation, estimates the minimum auditory limit and identifies retrocochlear alterations. This assessment is extremely important to diagnose hearing damage precociously, being recommended to all newborns with auditory risk indicators. Aim: To characterize the BAEP with different acoustic stimulus applied to newborns with risk indicators. Casuistry: Normal-hearing neonates of both sex born at term and preterm with risk indicators participated in this study. The BAEP examination has been performed with click and tone burst stimulus in both ears. The comparison between the variables has been analyzed using Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon and ANOVA tests. Spearman's test has been applied to measure the correlation between gestational age and BAEP. (p <0.05). Results and discussion: No differences in the BAEP measurements of term and preterm neonates. A significant difference has been inferred between click and tone burst stimulus, demonstrating that they bring different and complementary information. When correlated gestational age and BAEP with 500 Hz tone burst stimulus, a significance has been found. Conclusion: In this study, prematurity seems to have no influence on the variation of results. One also concludes that the BAEP tone burst, when this stimulus performed, may be a complementary instrument for assessing auditory maturation.
