Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Studies with different birth weights (BW) have shown alterations in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and in some cases, demonstrated that these changes persist until adulthood and may even be an indicator of cardiovascular disease risk in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To analyze whether different birth weight ranges are related to the autonomic nervous system. METHODS: I) Development of research on parasympathetic recovery of heart rate (HR) after aerobic physical activity on treadmill in adult women with normal birth weight; and II) Structuring a Systematic Review that addressed these two themes, in any range of BW. RESULTS: I) Women with lower ideal birth weight had slower parasympathetic HR recovery than those with higher weight within this range; II) Nine publications have shown that a change in BW, whether extreme, very low, low or high, can have some impact on ANS in adulthood. CONCLUSION: Birth weight may have a negative influence on the autonomic nervous system, causing autonomic dysfunction and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood.
