Abstract

This review aims clarify the role of herbal medicine, its numerous benefits and how it can be applied in the treatment of infestation caused by monogenean in fish. Currently, with the aquaculture intensification, there is the appearance of outbreaks of parasitic and bacterial diseases that economically devastate the fish production. Thus, use indiscriminate of antimicrobials and disinfectants is often to control mortalities and avoid huge economic losses, however, can result in contamination of fish and all bodies involved in the aquatic food chain and the environment. Therefore, the demand for safety and effective alternative treatments are needed, and the herbal medicine, millennial practice used in human medicine and animal production that has shown promise for using natural products with antimicrobial activity, immunostimulant and antiparasitic (against virus, protozoan and helminth). The use of herbal medicines has been shown to be very promising in aquaculture, however, it is still a new practice, little is known about the effects of these products on pathogens and their hosts.
