Abstract

A dor orofacial, reconhecida antigamente pelo termo genérico disfunção, apresenta alta prevalência na população, causando grande sofrimento ao paciente. Por este motivo, existe uma grande importância da participação do cirurgião-dentista na prática e no processo de diagnóstico adequado desta afecção, que nos tempos modernos tem se tornado cada vez mais importante, já que orienta o melhor tratamento. Assim, foi intuito deste trabalho realizar uma revisão das principais etiologias, métodos de diagnóstico, principais sinais e sintomas e formas de tratamento, para que sirva como um guia para o cirurgião dentista. Além disso, visa também fazer uma revisão sobre os principais fatores etiológicos geralmente associados, como estresse emocional e hiperatividade muscular, buscando identificar claramente os sinais e sintomas, para que o cirurgião dentista esteja apto a realizar tratamento para casos passíveis de tratamento em seu consultório particular ou reconheça casos complexos que devam ser encaminhados para tratamento por equipes multidisciplinares.

The orofacial pain, also known by the generic term dysfunction, is highly prevalent in the general population, causing great discomfort to the patients. For this reason, there is great importance of dentist’s participation in practice and in the process of proper diagnosis of this disease, which in modern times has become increasingly important as guides the best treatment. Thus, this study was aimed to review the main causes, diagnosis, main symptoms and treatment modalities, to serve as a guide to the dentist. Moreover, it also aims to review the main etiologic factors commonly associated, as emotional stress and muscular hyperactivity, to clearly identify signs and symptoms, so the dentist is able to realize simple treatment in your particular office or recognizes complex cases that could be send for treatment to multidisciplinary teams.
