Do comensalismo à patogenicidade: um estudo sobre estafilococos coagulase-negativa

Abstract

O livro tem como objetivo abordar aspectos da virulência, regulação gênica e resistência aos antimicrobianos das principais espécies de estafilococos coagulase-negativa (ECN), os microrganismos mais abundantes no corpo humano. Eles podem ser encontrados em diferentes partes da pele e nas mucosas, sendo que cada espécie apresenta predominância em determinada área do corpo. Os ECN mantêm uma relação simbiótica ou comensal com seus hospedeiros, mas são também considerados microrganismos oportunistas, que podem se aproveitar de algumas situações, como rupturas da barreira cutânea por trauma ou pela presença de corpos estranhos, e, com isso, atingir outros tecidos, se proliferar e desenvolver um comportamento patogênico. Segundo as autoras, a importância do estudo reside no fato de o aumento da resistência aos antimicrobianos em ECN ter se tornado um grande problema para o sistema de saúde, obrigando a uma melhor investigação sobre sua patogenicidade e perfil de resistência. Os ECN são verdadeiros reservatórios de vários genes de resistência, e estão mais sujeitos à pressão seletiva dos antimicrobianos usados comumente.
