Abstract

It has been used 77 rams, 34 pre-puberty and 15 sexually mature both Suffolk, 16 cryptorchids Santa Inês, 6 undergone to scrotal insulation for 96 hours, and 6 control group without insulation. The testis and the epididymis tail were evaluated by histopatology, concentrations of histamine, plasma and testicular tissue testosterone, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and nitric oxide, the last two ones just in scrotal insulation group and control group. Histopatology did not show any important change in the testis and epididymis tail in all groups. The concentration of histamine in both testis and epididymis tail were higher in pre-pubescent compared to mature rams. Histamine concentration was significantly higher in the cryptorchidism condition compared to insulation group and its control, which were not different from each other. Analyzing all the rams, there was a negative correlation between plasma testosterone and histamine concentration in the testis; in the epididymis tail this correlation occurred individually in each group. The insulation model for 96 hours was able to cause changes in testicular consistence, seminal motility and minor defects in spermatozoa. Nevertheless it does not cause evidence if the concentration of histamine, testosterone and testicular tissue testosterone, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and nitric oxide were strongly involved in the response mechanism to the heat stress stimuli over testis and epididymis.
