Abstract

The study and monitoring of altarpieces, specially those of large dimensions, requires an approximation to the whole of its surface that begins with the installation of auxiliary means whose cost considerably increases the budget of an already difficult operation to assume. In this work we present through a case study, the main altarpiece of the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Osuna (Seville), a novel method of study and monitoring of altarpieces based on the viewing and registration of its surface by remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS). Non-invasive method that provides a number of advantages to be considered in its implantation as a one more strategy in the intervention of altarpieces, because its relative cost, easy realization without causing interferences in the object, and the usefulness of information that derives from its employment, it meets the necessary requirements to be incorporated by professionals as one more resource in two specifics moments of the process: in diagnosis phase and monitoring and condition survey phases of these unique objects of our heritage.
