Abstract

La esclerosis múltiple (EM) es una de las enfermedades más comunes a nivel del sistema nervioso central (SNC). Es una enfermedad autoinmune inflamatoria desmielinizante que afecta principalmente a las mujeres en edad fértil. Aunque su etiología es desconocida, hay diversos factores que aumentan la predisposición de adquirirla tales como el humo del tabaco, la susceptibilidad genética y la deficiencia de la vitamina D. Esta patología manifiesta diversos signos y síntomas en función de la zona del SNC que se encuentre afectada destacando trastornos visuales, motores, sensitivos… Se distinguen cuatro modalidades de EM: EM recidivante- remitente (85% de los casos), EM progresiva secundaria, EM progresiva primaria y EM progresiva- recidivante (poco común). El diagnóstico de la EM es clínico. No obstante, cada vez tiene más relevancia las pruebas complementarias como el análisis del líquido cefalorraquídeo, las pruebas de imagen y los potenciales evocados. No existe cura, evoluciona de forma crónica, pero ante esto se disponen de diversos tratamientos en función del nivel de discapacidad que presente el paciente con la idea de mejorar la calidad de vida. Para prevenir y reducir el número de brotes en la EM recurrente- remitente son utilizados como fármacos de primera línea: los interferones y el acetato de glatiramer. El embarazo, lejos de estar contraindicado en mujeres con EM parece ser un factor protector, aunque es imprescindible suspender el tratamiento durante la gestación. Debido a la gran discapacidad que produce esta enfermedad entre los adultos jóvenes y a su gran incidencia, es preciso seguir investigando y crear nuevas líneas de investigación para poder encontrar nuevas y mejores terapias que garanticen la calidad de vida de todos estos pacientes
