Abstract

The purpose of this End of Master‟s Project is to analyse the factors that affect the health of young migrants who had been previously attended and protected by the Government in Andalucia and to study the main obstacles they encounter to access the healthcare system. This investigation was carried out on a group of young migrants who live in welfare flats from the NGO “Voluntarios Por Otro Mundo” in Jerez de la Frontera. The collection of the necessary information was completed by using a qualitative methodology in semi-structured interviews with the professional coordinator of the welfare flats and with the residents who live there; also by the participatory observation in the visits to the Health Centre. The obtained results show that the young migrants end up in a situation of social exclusion that severely affects their health by the age of 18 when they are no longer protected and attended by the Child Protection System. Furthermore, this situation worsens due to the internal and external barriers that they encounter to access and make use of the health resources. Lastly, we can conclude that literacy programs are necessary as is an increased awareness in the sanitary system itself.
