El extractivismo en América Latina

Abstract

Desde prácticamente su descubrimiento por parte de Colón, América Latina ha tomado en el mundo un papel de civilización exportadora de recursos primarios. Tanto los países más poderosos como, posteriormente, las grandes empresas multinacionales, han ido marcando las pautas a seguir de la región para que ésta basase gran parte de su economía en el extractivismo. Esto crea una relación de dependencia en la que el continente latinoamericano se ve obligado a cumplir con las exigencias del mercado globalizado si quiere crecer en él. Sin embargo, el sistema extractivista tiene consecuencias negativas en muchos ámbitos, la mayoría de los cuales son sufridos en las zonas donde se producen. Esta situación es insostenible en términos tanto sociales como ambientales, por lo que tarde o temprano el sistema económico mundial se verá obligado a cambiar en este aspecto. La salida hacia un modelo postextractivista debería hacerse de manera progresiva, pero empezando lo antes posible, ya que muchos de los efectos negativos producidos con el tiempo se tornan irreparables.
