Esclerosis múltiple: últimos avances

Abstract

La esclerosis múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad autoinmune y degenerativa que destruye la mielina de las neuronas del Sistema Nervioso Central (SNC). Afecta a un 0,1 % de la población mundial, aunque de manera irregular y predomina en el sexo femenino. Su et iología no está del todo clara, aunque se piensa que consiste en la interacción de varios factores, entre los que se encuentra el genético y el ambiental. De la misma manera su patogenia no se conoce totalmente , pero sí que se sabe que los linfocitos B y T tienen un importante papel en la inflamación y desmielinización características de la enfermedad. Las lesiones de la EM se manifiestan como placas de desmielinización, en las que se encuentran agrupados los axones dañados. La EM puede manifestarse de 4 fo rmas diferentes, siendo la más común la forma remitente - recurrente. El daño fisiológico en la mielina se presenta a través de unos signos y síntomas que son bastante diversos y que afectan principalmente a la capacidad motora de una persona, y entre los q ue se encuentran el déficit cognitivo, la fatiga y el entumecimiento de los miembros. Debido a la gran discapacidad que produce la enfermedad en las personas que la padecen se ha intentado a lo largo de los años y se sigue intentando hoy en día, encontrar un tratamiento eficaz para eliminar la enfermed ad y revertir sus efectos , si bien a día de hoy no se ha conseguido. Por todo esto es importante seguir investigando acerca del origen y de los mecanismos que producen la enfermedad y así poder encontrar nueva s terapias y tratamientos que ayuden a prevenir o a curar la EM.
