Usos tradicionales y actuales de los aceites esenciales

Abstract

Este trabajo está basado en una revisión bibliográfica, aunque previamente se han examinado los ingredientes 373 productos de cinco marcas de cosméticos (ALBA BOTÁNICA, DARPHIN, FILORGA, PAI SKINCARE y THE BODY SHOP), con el fin de conocer cuáles son los más utilizados. De todos los productos revisados, sólo el 26.2% contenían algún tipo de aceite esencial, haciendo un total de 46 aceites diferentes que corresponden a especies de 15 familias, donde Lamiáceas y Rutáceas son las más representadas. El aceite esencial más ampliamente encontrado en los productos ha sido el de Citrus x aurantium (naranjo amargo), superando el 35%. No obstante, especies de otras familias menos representadas en cuanto a número de especies, aparecen en reiteradas ocasiones, por lo que también tienen importancia en este estudio. Las especies cuyo aceite esencial han aparecido con una frecuencia superior al 10% se han caracterizado desde distintos puntos de vista: botánico, forma de extracción y composición del aceite, usos tradicionales, etc. Estas han sido Chamaemelum nobile (Asteráceas), Pelargonium graveolens (Geraniáceas), Mentha x piperita y Lavandula angustifolia (Lamiáceas), Melaleuca alternifolia y Leptospermum petersonii (Mirtáceas), Rosa x damascena (Rosáceas), y Citrus x aurantium, C. x bergamia y C. maxima (Rutáceas). Las especies cuyos aceites aparecen con una frecuencia menor se han tratado de forma conjunta. En todos los casos se ha tratado de establecer una relación entre las propiedades atribuidas al aceite esencial y el tipo de producto en el que se encuentra, observándose en algunos casos una clara relación.
