In this Final year Dissertation, the use and symbology of Pecten maximus (scallop) among the Copper and Bronze Age communities of the Lower Guadalquivir Valley is investigated. Firstly a preliminary description of the biological characteristics of this species of mollusc is presented, providing some relevant data for the understanding of its economic and cultural use. Secondly, an inventory of the shells of this mollusc found in funerary contexts of 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE in the Lower Guadalquivir valley is put together. An inventory including 20 scallop shells from four different sites has been obtained. Thirdly, an assessment is made of the morphology of these objects and of their archaeological contexts, including the characteristics of the funerary structures, the human deposits they were found in and their associations with other artifact types present. Finally, in way of conclusion, placement of the valves and their integration within the tombs, and their funeral, demographic and cultural associations, as well their relationship with other tools and their possible social use, is discussed.
