El arquitecto Andrés de Vandelvira en Úbeda

Abstract

Andrés de Vandelvira is one of the key architects of the History of the Art in Spain and one of the indisputable figures of the architecture of the Renaissance in our country, together with Diego de Siloé and Hernan Ruiz II. In spite of it, this artistic historiography relating to the author is relatively recent since he not always benefited from the merit and recognition inside his profession of being a “master” in the art of the hewn Stone nor in the “estereotomía”. His production is not monotonous, that is, he presents changes along his career due to the contact with other masters and he travels done as well as to the knowledge he acquired along the time. Although it doesn`t mean he lacked of that specific style that makes possible to identify him along all his work. His activity can be divided into three moments or styles. Firstly, following the style in the first Renaissance, later, his work changes to a more purified style in ornamentation, based on the structural balance, and finally he will achieve a great sobriety in the ornament in favor of the visualization of the architectural structure. About his activity we centre on the religious works and civilians constructed in the city of Úbeda. He stands out for his dominoes of the stonework and his ability to construct the most appropriate and amazing vaults of the period, according to the new taster classic taste.
