Los inventarios son fundamentales para conocer el patrimonio que pretendemos proteger. Pero también constituyen un primer paso en la puesta en valor de nuestro patrimonio, al atraer la mirada colectiva sobre unos testimonios hasta ahora desconocidos o desconsiderados como tal patrimonio. Por ello es necesario abordarlos con rigor, empezando por definir con precisión sus contenidos y siguiendo con la formación adecuada de los investigadores de campo que van a realizarlos. Es el caso de los complejos inventarios de arquitectura tradicional, donde a la variedad de manifestaciones que nos vamos a encontrar se une la no menos ambigua definición del concepto que los sustenta: popular, patrimonial, vernácula.

Inventories are essential to know the heritage that we try to protect. But also they constitude the first step toward valuing our heritage, attracting the collective look to a few testimonies unknown untill now or inconsiderate as such heritage. It is therefore necessary to approach them rigorously, beginning with the accurately definition of its contents and following with the suitable formation of the field investigator who are going to construct them. This is the case of the complex inventories of traditional architecture, where the variety of expressions that we will find joins the not less ambiguous definition of the concept that sustains them: popular, heritage, vernacular.
