Abstract

Introduction: IAN lateralization and transposition are surgical techniques used to implant placement in atrophied posterior mandibular ridges. These techniques are related to complications, such as, neurosensorial disturbances, devitalization of the anterior to the mental foramen teeth, osteomyelitis, jaw fractures, etc. Aims: Define the potential complications, assess their apparition, severity and recovery prognosis. Material and method: 13 articles were used in this systematic review. Results: complications are presented in both procedures, independently from the use of rotatory burrs or piezosurgery, but the piezosurgery reduces the number of complications. The most common complication is transitory hypoesthesia, which returns to normality in six month aprox. Tests that were used to measured the sensibility are, the two-point discrimination test, and the pain test. Conclusions: Despite potential complications, transposition/lateralization of the inferior alveolar nerve techniques have demonstrated their effectiveness, when they were performed by professionals with the proper training and experience. Keywords: “Alveolar nerve”, “transposition”, “lateralization”, “complications”, “paresthesia”, “consequence” , “adverse affects” and “ jaw fracture”.
