This doctoral thesis is based on 1700 barely known 16th century documents and surveys (books of written records of houses called ‘apeos’) which describe all kinds of buildings in the city of Seville belonging to the Cathedral and the charitable hospitals of Amor de Dios, Bubas, Cinco Llagas, El Cardenal and Espíritu Santo. After locating, identifying and evaluating the documentation, a special method of analysis has been developed to deal with the enormous amount of information provided by these sources. These texts describing the buildings have been transcribed and entered into a database and, from these, drawings have been made (including hypothetical distribution, elevation and volume plans) to facilitate the understanding of their original architecture. Then they have been grouped into four sections according to their use: houses, courtyard tenement housing (corrales), inns and shops. This has allowed us to deduce their main variants or typological features, based on the analyzed sources. In addition, almost all the studied properties have been identified and inserted in the current plans of the city to reconstruct a hypothetical plan of 16th century Seville that will facilitate an overall view of the time. Finally, a glossary of more than 500 specific terms of the alarifes (master builders) used in the analyzed surveys has been provided.

Esta tesis doctoral se apoya en una base documental apenas conocida de cerca de 1.700 documentos o apeos del siglo XVI que describen inmuebles de la ciudad de Sevilla pertenecientes a la Catedral y a los hospitales de beneficencia del Amor de Dios, las Bubas, las Cinco Llagas, el Cardenal y el Espíritu Santo. Tras localizar, identificar y valorar dicha documentación se ha desarrollado una metodología propia de análisis para tratar la información aportada por dichas fuentes. Se han trascrito y volcado los textos en una base de datos, y a partir de éstos se han realizado dibujos con hipótesis en planta, alzado y volumetrías de gran parte de ellos, para facilitar su comprensión arquitectónica. Después se han agrupado en cuatro apartados atendiendo a su uso: casas, corrales de vecinos, mesones y tiendas. Ello ha permitido deducir sus principales invariantes o rasgos tipológicos, según las fuentes consultadas. Además, casi todos los inmuebles analizados se han identificado en el parcelario actual y se ha insertado su planta dentro de un plano hipotético de la Sevilla del siglo XVI que facilita su visión de conjunto. Por último, se ha aportado un glosario de más de 500 términos arquitectónicos y voces propios de los alarifes usados en la redacción de los apeos analizados.
