Abstract

RESUMEN Introducción: El liquen plano oral (LPO) es una enfermedad crónica, mucocutánea e inflamatoria con etiología desconocida. En las últimas investigaciones se discute el papel del estrés oxidativo en la etiopatogenia de enfermedades inflamatorias y autoinmunes. Objetivo: El objetivo de esta revisión bibliográfica es evaluar la actividad del estrés oxidativo y el perfil de los antioxidantes en la saliva y el suero de pacientes con liquen plano oral. Material y métodos: Se realizan búsquedas bibliográficas en las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus y Cochrane Biblioteca Plus, limitando los artículos a los publicados entre 2012 y 2017, en Inglés o Español, estudios en humanos y a texto completo. Obtenemos un total de 20 artículos, entre los cuales encontramos revisiones bibliográficas y estudios casos-controles. Conclusiones: Un aumento del estrés oxidativo y un desequilibrio del sistema de defensa antioxidante pueden ser importantes en la patogénesis del LPO. La monitorización del estado antioxidante/oxidante en la saliva y suero de pacientes con LPO puede servir como biomarcador eficiente para su seguimiento y tratamiento.

Introduction: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, mucocutaneous and inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. In the latest research the role of free radicals in the etiopathogenesis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseasesis is discussed. Objetive: The aim of this bibliographic review is to assess the activity of oxidative stress and the profile of antioxidants in the saliva and serum of patients with planus oral lichen. Equipment and methods: We carry out a bibliographic search in the databases PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library Plus, using only articles published either in Spanish or English between 2012 y 2017, studies conducted in humans and a full text. We obtain a total of 20 articles among which we find bibliographic reviews and cases-control studies. Conclusion: An increase in oxidative stress and an imbalance in the antioxidant defense system may be important in the pathogenesis of OLP. The monitoring of the antioxidant/oxidant status of the saliva and serum of patients with OLP can serve as an efficient biomarker for its monitoring and treatment.
