Abstract

El objetivo de la presente tesis doctoral es aportar información sobre el conocimiento de español –hecho hasta ahora inadvertido– que tenía una figura histórica notable, Stephen F. Austin, el “Padre de Texas”, quien inició la colonización angloamericana en las tierras mexicanas en 1821. Para ello se realiza el estudio de un diario personal que escribió en secreto en la prisión de la Ciudad de México durante el año 1834. A tal fin, se traza el perfil biográfico personal y el lingüístico, y posteriormente se describe la historia, sentido y estructura del manuscrito objeto de estudio. Mediante la realización de una transcripción paleográfica rigurosa siguiendo los criterios de la red internacional CHARTA, se extraen datos que permiten desarrollar un análisis lingüístico que abarca los distintos niveles de la lengua (ortografía, estudio fonetico--‐fonológico, morfo--‐ sintaxis y lexico--‐semántico). El resultado de esta tesis no solo proporciona pruebas concluyentes acerca del grado de competencia lingüística en español que logró Stephen F. Austin, sino que, además, constituye un material de indudable interés para la investigación en torno a la historia del español del siglo XIX en Texas. A través de la escritura del propio Stephen F. Austin se obtiene una imagen no solo de la lengua, sino de la sociedad que se crea en torno a la etapa de conformación social realizada por colonos anglohablantes provenientes de los EE.UU.
