La antigua mezquita aljama de la capital granadina convertida en sede de la iglesia mayor fue objeto de deseo de muchos de los principales personajes de la sociedad del momento para comprar su capilla de enterramiento. Este privilegiado espacio tenía un carácter provisional y por tanto, cuando se produjese el traslado a la nueva construcción de la Catedral, los propietarios de capillas y sepulturas esperaban que estas también se trasladaran. Algo que nunca sucedió y que se convirtió en tema de desencuentro y conflicto entre los intereses eclesiásticos y privados.
