Epidemiología del trastorno cerebrovascular

Abstract

Stroke is the third cause of death, the first causing impairment or handicap in adults, and the second of dementia. The incidence of stroke is about 200 new cases per 100.000 habitants, and its prevalence is about 500-800 cases per 100.000 habitants per year. Between survivors, 10% will need permanent care, 40% will need some kind of asistence, another 40% will show permanent squelae, and only 10% will return to their normal daily living activities. The most important risk factors are, arterial hypertension, avanced age, previous stroke, cardiac illness, and stenosis of the carotid artery, and other factors related to life style. The expectation of life will give as a result in the nect years an increase for strokes. Prevention is based on the identification of the patients presenting risk factors, and for this, epidemiology is fundamental.
