Abstract

En el presente trabajo de investigación se lleva a cabo una revisión bibliográfica del efecto del zinc en la salud ocular, realizándose una evaluación de sus aspectos metabólicos en el organismo y valorando los efectos beneficiosos y los posibles efectos tóxicos de una suplementación con altas dosis de este elemento. Los efectos del zinc en el ser humano son principalmente beneficiosos ya que se trata de un oligoelemento esencial para el mismo y cuya deficiencia ocasiona severos problemas de salud. Sin embargo, también tiene su parte negativa y puede llegar a ser muy tóxico si no se toma con precaución. La degeneración macular asociada a la edad (DMAE) es un trastorno ocular que destruye lentamente la visión central y aguda, lo cual dificulta la lectura y la visualización de detalles finos. Afecta al 30% de la población mundial. Suele afectar a personas mayores de 50 años. La Retinosis Pigmentaria (RP) es una dolencia hereditaria que causa el mayor número de dependencia que atiende la ONCE en España. Aunque ninguna de estas patologías tiene actualmente cura, se emplean tratamientos que frenan su avance. Estos tratamientos incluyen aportes de zinc, que parece jugar un papel importante en la progresión de la enfermedad
