En este trabajo se ha determinado la biodegradabilidad de polietilenglicol, de pesos moleculares medios comprendidos entre 200 y 35.000, en cultivos aerobios. Tradicionalmente estos compuestos polímericos se habían identificado como recalcitrantes y son componentes de aguas residuales industriales dificilmente biodegradables. Utilizando cultivos discontínuos, inoculados con biomasa adaptada a polietilenglicol 10.000 durante más de dos años, se ha logrado la eliminación de polietilenglicol de pesos moleculares comprendidos entre 200 y 10.000. Se ha comprobado que la biomasa se adapta a polímeros de menor peso molecular pero resulta ineficiente para los de mayor peso
Polyethylene glycol aerobic biodegradability. Biodegradability of polyethylene glycols of different molecular weight was assesed, due to the recalcitrant nature of these polymeric compounds, produced in any industrial wastewaters, hardly biodegradable. Using discontinuous cultures, inoculated whith and adapted inoculum for polyethylene glycols 10.000 for more than two years, the range from polyethylene glycols 200 to 10.000 could be eliminated. It has been found that biomess adapts to polymers of lower molecular weight, but is insufficient for those of greater weight.
