The Society of Jesus was one of the most critical censor in the La Plata region of the tribute system based on personal service or the mita. The Jesuits through their institutional complex tried to preserve the Indian rights against a model of quasislavery, in which they were adscribed, a work system that caused them innumerable hardships and controversies with the colonial enterpreuners.
