Abstract

This paper is aimed to show the existence of several motifs in Juan Rulfo's fiction, which cannot be explained or understood by means of a Western point of view. His characters are not indians but half-castes; this circumstance makes us think of an existential background which shows an awareness on the part of the author. This awareness led me to a search into American history before Columbus; in this search I found a number of key motifs, which are necessary for a full understanding of his characters souls.
